Launched initially under the title of the All Wales Primary Care Mental Health Network (AWPCMHN), our current title under WaMH in PC was adopted in 2004.
Throughout the aim of our organisation has been to provide a Welsh forum for like-minded individuals to work together to:
Our network was established in response to the April 2002 publication of Adult Mental Health: A National Service Framework (NSF) for Wales and seen as a crucial channel for the effective application of the eight health and social service care standards identified by the Welsh NSF.
We are set up as an RCGP Wales special interest working group under the guiding principles and aims of our Constitution, which was adopted in October 2008 and updated in February 2011.
Membership is limited to a maximum of 20 voting Core Group Members , 4 of which must be GPs of good standing of the RCGP, who support the aims and purpose of WaMH in PC.
Between them they provide relevant skills, knowledge, competency and experience relating to the provision of mental health and are in turn supported by 2 non-voting staff members (WaMH in PC's Project Manager and the RCGP Wales Manager).
The core group has two principal officers - that of Chair and Vice Chair - and since our inception we have worked alongside the Welsh Government to improve the of quality in mental health care in Wales through our Practitioners Network.
The Network brings primary care mental health practitioners, professionals, agencies, organisations, carers, service users, their friends and family together to help improve mental health services across Wales.
The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Wales in Cardiff has provided administrative and funding support since 2003 and been responsible for organising a number of educational conferences, events and R&D programmes.
