Part 1 - Local Primary Mental Health Support Services

Part 1 makes it a legal requirement for Local Health Board and Local Authorities to work together to expand and strengthen mental health services at primary care level across Wales for people of all ages.

We have now created a series of resources on this site to help GPs and their teams understand this part of the Measure which came into force in October 2012. You can access these resources through the following link - Part 1 - Downloadable Resource.

The appointment of new primary care mental health workers under Part 1 of the Measure – Local Mental Health Support Services - will provide assessments, treatments, onward referral, information and support to individuals and their carers. They will also provide support and advice to primary care teams.

The services will be provided locally either within or close to GP surgeries to make them easier for the patient to get to with access to services via GP referral.

Local primary mental health workers will work with but not supplant General Medical Services and establish close working relationships with primary care teams.

There will be wider access to effective psychological therapies at the primary care level for those who are assessed as needing such services.

The services will enable early intervention to promote prompt and accurate diagnosis and an appropriate management plan. 

This will improve emotional well-being and mental health outcomes and reduce the risk of the individual’s condition worsening.

The services are expected to develop and maintain good working relationships with other relevant services to support individuals in their social and physical health needs to benefit their mental health.
